Manila International Book Fair: A Booked Date

At last I have this time to share about my mini adventure at the 35th Manila International Book Fair or MIBF. If you love libraries and endless book sales, then you’d probably have “the feels” of my excitement on that event. A few months before the MIBF, I’ve been constantly checking its schedule on the web.

The year’s book fair happened last September 17-21 at the SMX Convention Center in SM Mall of Asia (MOA). So I’ve been planning my whole week prior to that as to when I’d be attending the event. I love coming to the book fair as much as lovers want Valentines’ Day.

Just a little back story…

I’ve first attended the MIBF about seven to eight years ago. I was a member of my school’s Book Lovers’ Club in high school. Where else would I be? I’m not interested in academic or drama clubs. (Although I was part of the Science Club, for academic purposes). Anyway, as a Book Lovers’ Club member, I was among the privileged to have a tour at the MIBF with the school library team. I don’t know what exactly we had to do there. I just wanted to go outside the school 🙂 That time, the MIBF exhibited at the World Trade Center. Whoa! It was for me a big, big, no… It was an enormous library. Of course, I never actually cared what happened there. All I knew was we collected brochures, magazines, and freebies. That, for me, was the book fair—a place to get freebies related to school supplies and the library. Continue reading

Books Make You Fall In Love

So, I’m back into reading books. Well not as of posting time but about 2 weeks ago. Why does that sound special to me? Because I haven’t read a book for a long time. Personally, I have been a little too busy with my work schedule and yes, with social media. That feels a little bad, though.

It’s not like I haven’t literally read a book. I’m a copy editor for a textbook publishing house. I read and edit books which are educational. But reading a book for a living and reading a book for the love of reading are two different things.

When you read (and edit) a book for a living, you fall in love with knowledge. You fall in love with the idea that the kids who would be using your materials will gather the wisdom the author shares. As a copy editor, I have to make sure that the concepts and inputs the author writes are valid, relevant and accurate. You would’t want those little kids learn something that they’ll find erroneous when they grow up, would you?

Whereas, reading a book for the love of reading means falling in love with the writer. You fall in love with words. You may even find yourself echoing those lines that sound significant to you. You fall in love with the characters. Your imagination plays the scene from which part you are reading. And the most common about book lovers? They would find themselves a part of the story. I know how that feels, of course.

With the rise of e-books, maybe many people would be lured to love reading as a habit. It doesn’t matter whether you are reading a novel, an educational book or even the encyclopedia as long as you develop the habit. As for me, I still like the feeling of holding those covers and flipping pages with my fingers.

So, what are you reading today? 🙂
