So, I’m back into reading books. Well not as of posting time but about 2 weeks ago. Why does that sound special to me? Because I haven’t read a book for a long time. Personally, I have been a little too busy with my work schedule and yes, with social media. That feels a little bad, though.
It’s not like I haven’t literally read a book. I’m a copy editor for a textbook publishing house. I read and edit books which are educational. But reading a book for a living and reading a book for the love of reading are two different things.
When you read (and edit) a book for a living, you fall in love with knowledge. You fall in love with the idea that the kids who would be using your materials will gather the wisdom the author shares. As a copy editor, I have to make sure that the concepts and inputs the author writes are valid, relevant and accurate. You would’t want those little kids learn something that they’ll find erroneous when they grow up, would you?
Whereas, reading a book for the love of reading means falling in love with the writer. You fall in love with words. You may even find yourself echoing those lines that sound significant to you. You fall in love with the characters. Your imagination plays the scene from which part you are reading. And the most common about book lovers? They would find themselves a part of the story. I know how that feels, of course.
With the rise of e-books, maybe many people would be lured to love reading as a habit. It doesn’t matter whether you are reading a novel, an educational book or even the encyclopedia as long as you develop the habit. As for me, I still like the feeling of holding those covers and flipping pages with my fingers.
So, what are you reading today? 🙂
